The Light Within by Rev. Jim Toole
April brings Easter filled with joy, celebration and new growth. Easter holds a twofold expression; one relating to Christianity and one to the Easter Bunny. Both relate to highest and best hidden within waiting to be expressed.
As the children joyfully run to find the brilliantly colored eggs and treasures hidden, so can we pursue the brilliance and beauty of life. As we choose to pursue life in our innocence, we release ourselves from judgment into freedom and like children, express our joy, laughter, excitement and exuberance.
As the eggs are opened to reveal the treasure inside, children celebrate what they have found and indulge in the sweetness and enjoyment of what they have gathered to themselves. As we look beyond the obvious and find the truth of the treasure of life within us and around us, we too are able to enjoy the bounty that life is and offers us as we bring our curiosity and fascination to it.
Remembering our childlike nature reminds us to look at life with more love, joy and openness. As we do, we are able to embrace life in a simpler way experiencing more of its meaning, happiness and fulfillment.
As we turn our attention to a different experience of Easter, we turn our attention to the resurrection of Jesus. By rising from the dead, emerging from the dark into the light, he established a pathway of salvation, through Christianity, for those who believe in him. While appearing to his disciples, he instructs them to go out into the world and spread the good news of salvation; Matthew 28:18-20.
In our everyday lives we at times find ourselves in an empty and/or dark place not knowing what to do. We may have experienced a loss, judged something we’ve done as a failure, or just feel trapped or lost.
Our “resurrection” occurs when we look within and recognize that we are an immortal soul experiencing the circumstances and situations of life around us. By recognizing we are not “life as we know it,” that we are the Light of Life, ever dispelling the darkness, we rise above what we may sometimes have to face in our lives.
Whether we choose to approach life with the innocence, playfulness and curiosity of a child, or find our power in our Truth within, we are an ever emerging expression of Spirit. Let us celebrate, with great joy that we bring meaning to life by discovering the brilliance and beauty of our Light Within and sharing it with the world.
The surge of energy nature brings in spring to the world around us, also is being experienced within SCOL. The Visioning and Bylaw Review Committees are busily at work. Please see separate article about the Bylaw Review.
The Visioning Committee members include Jeffrey Lambert, Tim Brady, Suzanne Mitchell, Gary Mantz, Gerry Grieg, and Joan Volpe, Chair. After invigorating discussion, the Committee presented a report to the Board which was accepted on March 17th. It is agreed that the visioning work will address the issue of “Who Are We? Church, Center, something else?” Responses to this question will assist in creating a vision statement for SCOL and a modification to or development of a new mission statement.
The first step in the process is a facilitated workshop in early April for Board members and Associate Ministers. The second step brings the results of the board workshop to a facilitated workshop in late April/May for the congregation. Those who cannot attend the workshop will have an opportunity to respond through a questionnaire. Compilation of all this information will then be sent to members for review and comments. A report then will be drafted with recommendations sent to the congregation followed up by a Special Meeting of the congregation for a vote. WHEW!!! Put your thinking caps on! The work is now underway and your voice matters.
On a more practical level, the Board voted to repair the Sanctuary roof and has engaged a contractor. Revenue for the repairs will come from various resources; one of which is a fund raiser for the congregation. Watch for more details as the resource plan is developed.
We are in exciting times at SCOL and it is a pleasure to work with you. We encourage your involvement.
With the best of wishes,

Bylaw Review Workshops
Sunday, April 15th at 11:45am and 5:45am
Several members have noted how the Bylaws that guide our Center have fallen short on clarity and possibly intention, leading to the formation of a Bylaw Review Committee. Having identified areas for possible Bylaw updating, we invite all members to join us for two Workshops to give us your input. We will:
Outline several vague, faulty or missing areas
Explain how these have caused issue in the past
Offer options that could address fixing those issues
Listen carefully to Your feedback as we step toward recommendations
Topics include important items such as: Membership requirements, Voting Member Status, Annual Meeting changes, Pastoral Terms and more. The Bylaws are critical to guiding the Board. Please consider investing time in our future and making your voice heard. Thank you.
Do the spirit guides choose you or do you choose the guides?
Each person is assigned a Guide at birth; usually it is the Doorkeeper or Joy Guide as some call them. This Guide acts as the “guardian angel” for the child, always attentive and protective. Sometimes they manifest in a childlike vibration but they are actually very wise and attuned to the child’s vibration and life. The Doorkeeper remains with the individual throughout life, guiding, inspiring and protecting at all times. Most small children sense and some see their spirit guide near them and will react to their presence in different ways. At times small children will react and play with an “invisible playmate.” They will laugh or look in a direction and respond to the Guide’s presence; to the adult, it looks as if the child is laughing and responding to an area where the adult sees nothing in the physical realm. As the child matures, Guides of a different nature are drawn to him depending upon the individual’s spiritual path or field of interest or study. These Guides remain with the individual for life depending upon the need or life interests.
It is a universal constant that like attracts like. The guides attracted to you would have had similar Earth life experiences and interests and would be able to give you the benefit of their expertise in different areas of your life. This the short answer with much more to learn.
