March Focus Newsletter

Freedom, Fellowship, Fulfillment by Rev. Jim Toole

With our annual general meeting ending and a new board stepping in, we begin a new year at Sarasota Center of Light. As we do, we bring our attention to a theme that brings so much of what we want to express as individuals and a center into focus: Freedom, Fellowship and Fulfillment.

We know that what we put our attention on and create intention for is what we manifest and experience. As we step out on our individual paths and together on a journey in 2020 as a spiritual family and community, let us hold our hearts and souls open to experiencing the Freedom and sharing the Fellowship that helps to create Fulfillment of our purpose and in our lives.

When I speak of freedom, I do not speak of freedom from, I speak of freedom with. Freedom is not escaping from our lives as we know it, it is being free right in the middle of the lives we have created, whether it is challenging or peaceful.

Fellowship may sound like something you do with others in a group that you participate in once in a while. This is true, and yet, I speak of the fellowship of sharing our spiritual intimacy and vulnerability with one another. Being open, real and present with and for each other.

Where two or more are joined therefore I Am. The I Am We Are allows us to experience the freedom of sharing our Spirit and Divine Love while we are walking together on our path of spiritual awakening and fellowship.

One view of fulfillment is being “filled full” with what we seek or desire. As the Light and Love of All That Is expressed, fulfillment becomes the absence of what we seek or desire, leaving us in a state of unlimited freedom, just as were are, right in the middle of the lives we are living.

When we open into the freedom of our unconditional unity with one another, we create a connection that multiplies and magnifies the Love and Light we are individually for our own fulfillment and collectively as one.

Let us choose consciously to embark upon a journey together, experiencing and enjoying freedom, the unity of our fellowship, manifesting and experiencing profound fulfillment of our purposes and in our lives.

President’s Message

As I write this, I am a member of this joyful and exciting community, the congregation of Sarasota Center of Light.

As you read it, I will be President of the Board of Directors of SCOL. As President I am honored to work with all of you, the ministers, all the members of the Board, in fact, everyone in and around our great Center.

SCOL had a few years that were interesting, to say the least. Last year was a dynamic, fruitful and fun year of re-growth. I look forward to the coming year with a great deal of positive anticipation and excitement. With your help this will happen! One of the changes that we have seen this past year is the transformation of the Wednesday night service into the beautiful and peaceful one hour meditation – healing – contemplative – intentional – candle lighting service. If you have not yet experienced this one hour of beautiful peace, joy and healing on Wednesday evening, I invite you.

My attitude toward the congregation is that when I speak of your help it is not just as a volunteer but also your ideas your thoughts and absolutely – your enthusiasm.
Many of you may know me from classes events or Sunday and Wednesday services. Now as President of the Board of Directors, it’s fair that I tell you a little bit more about myself. My original degree and graduate work was in history and international relations. I have been divorced for approximately 20 years; my ex-wife and I are friends and both happy with the 25 years we spent together. We have one daughter who lives in San Diego and she has a daughter, Sienna, the most wonderful six-year-old granddaughter on earth.
I went back to school and got a second graduate degree and became a Science of Mind minister.

In meditation I became aware that there were very important areas of metaphysical thought that I had not really looked into and they were Healing and Mediumship. As I looked at this I was led to SCOL and it has been a great and exciting three or four years.
I am committed that we will join and work hand-in-hand to have an even more beautiful and more exciting year in 2020. YES.

Blessing Bowl

Each month on the second Sunday at both services and at the Wednesday Candlelight service, a special collection is made to benefit a charitable organization.

The total collected in February was $182 for our Hands of Light. Thank you to everyone.

Music and Messages on March 8th!

An amazing and inspiration musician, Sam Lane will be tickling the ivories, playing musical selections while Mediums give Spirit Messages between the selections.

Join us on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Healing Ministry

We thank all of our healers for being channels of healing energy and the Divine Power, and being of service at the center. Our basic healing classes have been completed, allowing our new students to have an opportunity to heal in the sanctuary soon. Look for new smiling faces behind the chairs on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.

A meeting of the healers is scheduled for March 15 in Flexer Chapel after the morning celebration. There will be some administration tasks, fellowship and an opportunity to share healing with one another (Healers Healing Healers), followed by a potluck or lunch after. There will be communication sent out to the healers in reference to this. Please plan to be there as part of the connection, communication and collaboration of the healing ministry of the center for 2020. Please contact Ranie Brothers, our new healing coordinator, with any questions you might have.

We are here to support you in your health and well-being. Whether you are facing a physical challenge or otherwise, we are here for you in your daily life. We are always available to send energy, healing and inspiration.

Anyone who would like to receive healing may call or email the Center office or go to the contact page of our website. Rev. Lisa Johnson oversees this process. Our healers are dedicated to be there with the healing you need. Someone is always there for you. Let us know how we can support you.

Hands of Light

The February “Souper Sunday” was a big success again this year. Our visiting mediums, Geoff & Al Potts were able to join us at the services and coffee hour. HOL member Phyllis Lambert was ordained at the morning service which added to our celebration and the festivities of the day. We wish to thank everyone who joined us and brought soup and other foods to make the day a special occasion.

The March (3/8) morning coffee hour will be a St. Patrick’s day theme and will be dedicated as “Volunteer Appreciation Day” to honor ALL of the volunteers who make our center a special place full of love and fellowship. HOL has been asked to let the board handle the details and so it is.

At the morning coffee hour, there will be several tables set up with information about the various volunteer opportunities and committees that exist here at SCOL. Please be sure to check out what is available and what you may find interesting and intriguing enough to pursue.

Looking ahead, we are formulating plans to have another fundraiser in the fall, possibly October 17th, to celebrate 2020 with a Roaring 20’s Dance Party! More information will be forthcoming as we work out the details, so Save the Date!

The Hands of Light team is open to all and we would love to welcome new members. We meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 5:30 in Davis Hall before the evening service.

Education Committee

The Education Committee continues to meet the first Wednesday of each month. Committee members include: Eddie Muniz, Ranie Brothers, Rev. Jim, Janet Grogan, Rev. Lisa Johnson, a new member, Mitch Earle, and Joan Volpe, Chair. The Committee will have a table at Volunteer Appreciation Day on March 8th to discuss our work and goals. We are hopeful that others will become interested in this work and join the Education committee.

Throughout February and early March, the Center held a series of workshops discussing the book, The Four Agreements, written by Don Miguel Ruiz. The workshops were well received. The Education Committee would like to learn whether you are interested in having the Center present additional workshops based on spiritual themes and/or books. If you have an opinion, please email Joan Volpe at We also would appreciate your suggesting themes and books on which you would like us to focus.

Starting in March, we will be offering an introductory class on Metaphysical Spirituality taught by Rev. Jim. We also we will begin a series on the Spiritual Laws. Please watch the website and the Bulletins for more details and information.

Basic Healing classes continue throughout the month of March as do the Intermediate Mediumship classes. A special fund raising concert will be held on March 28th in the Sanctuary. The Center is pleased to have Tony Lavogna and Janie Boisclair present a program of spiritual music. Please join us on March 28th at 7:00 p.m.

With thoughts of joy and peace,
Joan Volpe, Chair
