The Meaning of Mother by Rev. Jim Toole
What mother means to each of us may be different because of our life and experience. Society can even paint a picture of what a mother is meant to be. The truth is mother means so much more to our heart and soul than we sometimes realize. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the woman who brought us into the world and so much more.
We rarely stop to think about the fact that we literally came to life within our mother. That for the first portion of our life, we were inseparable from her. We are a part of her and her a part of us. We were brought into this world by her and given life because of her.
Our connection with our mother runs much deeper than our development from embryo to fetus to child within her. There is a place within our soul that knows our infinite and eternal connection to her. There is a longing in our heart to feel, and know and be embraced by her love. Although each of us has had different experiences in life with our mother, our heart and soul connection with her has the deepest meaning.
Even with each of us having unique relationships with our mother, motherhood is a universal connection we all experience. The life energy of Mother Nature continuously surrounds and embraces us. We are nurtured and supported by Mother Earth. The energy of the divine feminine is represented by Mother Mary, Kuan Yin, Isis, Gaia, Shakti, Athena, Tara and many more. This is a vital and important energy within each of us that allows us to balance our power and strength with our gentle, nurturing, receptive nature.
As we bring honor to our mothers on Mother’s Day during May, let us look within us, around us and into the deeper significance of the divine feminine for the gift of the meaning that Mother holds for us. Let us each trust our hearts and souls to remind us of the beauty, love and fulfillment of our deepest connection to our mother. It is when we surrender, beyond the physical, into our Spirit, that we find the true Meaning of Mother. Happy Mother’s Day!

As we move through spring and prepare for summer, the Center is engaging in our own “spring cleaning.” Literally, we have a spanking new look to the Learning Center which invites rentals and new ideas for the use of that space. We are making progress toward being one step closer to being the spiritual healing center of southwest Florida.
The Board welcomes comments from congregants about how the Center will grow in the future. Our Marketing team is making strides to get the face of the Center more visible in the community. The Education Committee is balancing the traditions we stand by with metaphysical teachings which broaden our experiences. And, the Ministerial team is enhancing the spiritual experiences offered at services.
The Board is ever cognizant of its leadership role and fiduciary responsibility. Equally important to the functions of the board is the affable team approach we have all come to rely upon. In native teachings, we would learn that right thinking, right feeling and right doing are the ingredients for success. This recipe for success goes far beyond the board and ministerial team. We are grateful to the many volunteers who make the success of the Center possible. Please know your efforts and good heartedness are recognized and appreciated.
In joy and peace,
Each month on the second Sunday at both services and at the Wednesday Candlelight service, a special collection is made to benefit a charitable organization. The total collected in April was $209 for Tidewell Hospice Music for Memory.
We thank all of our healers for being channels of healing energy and being of service at the center. We have just finished our basic healing classes and will be scheduling our intermediate healing class curriculum soon. Anyone interested in learning about healing please contact Rev. Jim.
We are excited that Phyllis Lambert has decided to be our Healing Team Coordinator. We’re so grateful for the energy and effort that Robin Washburn offered the healing team. She will be focusing her energy as Vice-President of the Board, property management coordinator and marketing coordinator.
There will be a healers meeting following the morning celebration on May 28. Please join us for this important meeting, connection, fellowship and to enjoy some food and refreshments together. Please look for this announcement and other important information being emailed by our new Healing Team Coordinator, Phyllis Lambert.
We are here to support you in your health and well-being. Whether you are facing a physical challenge or otherwise, we are here for you in your daily life. We are always available to send energy, healing and inspiration.
Anyone who would like to receive healing may call or email the Center office or go to the contact page of our website. Rev. Lisa Johnson oversees this process. Our healers are dedicated to be there with the healing you need. Someone is always there for you.
The first Wednesday of the month, May 1, is dedicated to Healers Healing Healers in the Sanctuary at 6:00pm.
The month of May brings many opportunities to the Sarasota Center of Light for growth and personal spiritual development. We are fortunate to have medium, Joan Carra, join us the week of May 19th. Joan has been identified as one of the top 100 mediums in the country. She will be offering two workshops, Sunday services and individual readings. Look to the Bulletins and website for detailed information.
Two favorites will be returning to the Center in May. Joanne Leo is offering a workshop on May 14, with the enticing title of The Fairy Godmother Is Not coming. Sound Healer, Robert Austin, will present a Crystal and Tibetan Bowl concert as the special event on Friday, May 31. For folks interested in personal sound healing, Robert offers the Double Pyramid Activation Workshop on June 1st. Full descriptions of these events are found on the website, www.sarasotacenteroflight.com.
Circles are at the heart of many spiritual traditions. Among native peoples, the circle takes on a variety of meanings and commemorates celebrations, life passages, and spiritual connection. For the Center, the circle represents the continuous energetic connection to Spirit and serves as a means to align with our guides and teachers for inspiration, guidance and healing. Because of their importance, two circles were offered by Rev. Jim in April. Opportunities will soon be available to learn more about circles, including those based on native practices of medicine wheels which assist us to be centered with Mother earth and inspired by Father sky. We look forward to serving you.
With love and blessings,
Joan Volpe, Chair
The person who has mastered himself to the degree that he never becomes cross with anyone is well on the road to mastery. Crossness is destructive. When one speaks unkind words in a display of temper, he not only hurts those who are the targets of his words, but he hurts himself. Nature has created penalties for anger such as high blood pressure, headaches, indigestion, insomnia and other more permanent damage to the physical body.
When you are tempted to be cross, stop and consider the probable results of your bad temper. Cross words can result in your losing a friend or alienating a loved one. Think twice before you give voice to a cross thought and force yourself to be pleasant. It will pay rich dividends.
You are Loved.
Hands of Light
Thank you all for joining us at our Easter/Spring Coffee Hour. Hands of Light enjoyed watching the welcoming of the Spring Season with such warm smiles and conversation.
So……bring those smiles and friendly conversation to the May Coffee Hour on Sunday, May 5th, after the A.M. and P.M. Services. HOL will host, with a Spring Flair, sweet/savory delights and beverages. It is always appreciated if you wish to donate a sweet/savory item to be enjoyed at any Coffee Hour or event.
Also, we are always collecting food items (nonperishable). The collection basket is located in the area of the church book shelves. HOL continues to accept donations for Stillpoint Mission.
Hands of Light holds monthly meetings on the 3rd Sunday of every month at 5:30 p.m. in Davis Hall before the evening Service.
All are welcomed.

“Connection with gardens, even small ones, even potted plants, can become windows to the inner life. The simple act of stopping and looking at the beauty around us can be prayer.”
– Patricia R. Barrett, The Sacred Garden
It is with great sadness that we share that our Healing Garden was vandalized recently. While the destruction of our fountain gave us pause, we have compassionately accepted the situation and are focused on the restoration of our fountain and the beautification of our sacred garden.
Our Trustees have been hard at work managing the Center’s properties. With the assistance of our Maintenance Supervisor, we have truly come together as a team, with a shared focus on ensuring our grounds and buildings are well maintained. If you happen upon an issue that needs to be addressed by one of our Trustees, please send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org or call 941.953.6620 with detailed information, and our Office Manager will pass it on to one of our dedicated Trustees to follow up.
The marketing of our precious Center of Light requires collaboration with internal and external partners. I am happy to share that the Sarasota Center of Light recently joined the Holistic Chamber of Commerce, our newest external partner.
This is a great networking opportunity for our Center of Light, given we are meeting some truly talented, skilled and educated local holistic practitioners, who are focused on feeding the heart, mind, body and soul every month.
For more information about the chamber, go to email@example.com or call Chapter President Patricia Starr at 941.677.3418
One of our crucial internal partners is our Education Committee. They are responsible for bringing new ideas for classes, workshops, events and visiting guests to our center. Once the ideation and then vetting processes are complete, they pass on the detailed information to the Marketing Committee, who brainstorms to create effective campaigns for the approved activities. This is a process and requires love dedication to our spiritual home from all the individuals volunteering their time.
If you have suggestions for upcoming events, or if you or someone you know is interested in providing this type of stewardship to our center, by joining the Marketing or Education committee, please reach out to Robin at 941.302.5783 (cell) or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Blessings for a positively energetic and loving May.
