Gratitude for Giving by Rev. Jim Toole
Sarasota Center of Light, originally known as The Shrine of the Master was founded in 1949 by Rev. Dorothy and Dr. Russell Flexer and will celebrate its 69th anniversary on November 4. We share our gratitude to Rev. Dorothy for giving her heart and soul to not only this center, to everyone in her life. She changed the lives of many, and continues to make a difference in the world through the expression of our Center of Light.
Rev. Dorothy Flexer led her life according to the principles she taught. Her life was her faith and her faith was her life. She was first and foremost an instrument of Spirit and trusted her Spirit Teachers explicitly. Her life-long dedication to being of service to Spirit and mankind provided a blueprint for those who knew her. In August of 1996, at the age of 82, Rev. Dorothy made her transition and went to her spiritual home.
Rev. Dorothy always made a big deal about birthdays and she was always 39 and holding. She was kind and compassionate but put up with no nonsense. She encouraged everyone to take responsibility for their circumstances and work hard on any areas they wanted to improve.
Rev. Dorothy owned a blue Cadillac and she was always so appreciative for the privilege of having a reliable car. It was her way of giving back and expressing gratitude to Spirit by using it to help others. She would take her church members to doctor appointments, to the grocery store, the hairdresser and other places they needed to go. If anyone had a need, as a minister and as a friend, she was always there. Rev. Dorothy’s was a true ministry of serving Spirit and the people.
Let us not only honor Rev. Dorothy as our founder, but a wonderful example of how we can be of service in our expression and purpose. Let us hold gratitude for knowing that “as you give, so shall you receive” and “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
For it is in giving that we are able to be thankful as we continue the cycles of life and creation by reflecting and expressing the love, light and inspiration that Spirit is and that we are. Let us, during this time of celebrating our 69th anniversary and Thanksgiving, remember that fulfillment comes not from what we have, but through Gratitude for Giving.
Happy Anniversary and Happy Thanksgiving!
Please look on our website for more details of our history and
Rev. Dorothy and Dr. Russell’s Lives.
Loving Kindness is a practice of opening one’s heart with compassion to ourselves and others. We all have a natural capacity for allowing our hearts to open with tenderness.
Our Center of Light is a sanctuary of peace and comfort in a busy world. We project love and compassion to one another. Newcomers to the Center speak of the warmth and acceptance they feel when they come to services or events. In our desire to share our spiritual essence, we project tenderness and compassion.
The month of November has special significance to the Sarasota Center of Light. Sixty nine (69) years ago on November 4th, our founders, Rev. Dorothy and Dr. Russell Flexer, held the first service of our spiritual home in Sarasota. At the dedication ceremony of our church, it was stated that this physical structure would be an island of Light, a place of Peace, a House of God. Rev. Dorothy exemplified the teaching that spirituality is a way of living. She emphasized the importance of creating conditions for the inner spiritual growth of the individual. These conditions included loving support.
As the holidays approach, activity increases; for many stress rises, and the need for a place of loving kindness becomes ever more important. Sarasota Center of Light can provide that sanctuary by remembering that our response and reaction to others starts with recognizing our own need for tenderness and kindness. We project what we feel.
Through random acts of kindness such as lending a helping hand, seeing and sharing the unintended gifts of a stressful situation, remembering to take a deep breath, smiling instead of scorning, we are expanding the work of Spirit. As the holiday season approaches, let us embrace our true purpose and interact as beings of loving kindness.
Wishing you a happy and blessed Thanksgiving,
We want to thank our healers for sharing their energy and light and being of service as part of our healing ministry at Sarasota Center of Light. Our healing team continues to grow with nine new healing students attending our latest Basic Healing series.

Marketing Committee Report
Wonderful comes from working together…
“None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” – Mother Teresa
My first task as the new marketing chair was to assemble our new marketing committee and we have formed a really talented, loving and collaborative group of individuals, devoted to supporting the growth our center. My sincere thanks to Rev. Lisa Johnson, Linda Viddish, Eddie Muniz, Ben Porter, Gary Mantz and Suzanne Mitchell as our new committee members.
Our social media footprint is increasing by the day, so please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Next Door and LinkedIn for updates on services, classes, workshops and special events.

Hands of Light Team
The Education Committee is very pleased with the increasing interest of mediums and speakers wishing to play a part at our Center. After a successful week with Vincent Genna in October, we are now preparing to welcome visiting medium from Scotland, Bill Coller, who will be joining us for a week. On Friday, November 2nd, Bill Coller will offer an Evening of Mediumship. We hope all will attend. There will be a love offering, however, no one will be turned away. Please watch for announcements of other workshops Bill will be offering. Our visiting mediums are fundraisers for the Center. As a result of your participation with Vincent Genna, the Center received approximately $900.
On November 11th, we are joined once again by Mike Markaverich with his magical fingers on the keyboard. It is always a celebration when Mike plays for us.
Other offerings in November include Carolan Carey’s series of mediumship classes, entitled Nuts and Bolts, which starts on November 13th. Details can be found in the Bulletins and on social media. Whether you are a beginner or already have received some training in mediumship, Carolan will reinforce the details of the work. Her classes are both interesting and fun to attend.
Throughout this month, the Sarasota Center of Light is in celebration. Starting with our 69th anniversary on November 4th and concluding the month with Thanksgiving, we offer gratitude and joy to one another. We are thankful for the teachings of Metaphysical Spirituality and are devoted to continue the work and beliefs of our founders, Rev. Dorothy and Dr. Russell Flexer.
Have a Blessed month,
Joan Volpe, Chair
One should never speak despairingly of oneself because that is negative. If you are aware that thoughts are things, you will know that the thoughts you place on the ether will bring you exactly what you created, for thoughts can be sensed by other people.
If you say, “I am stupid,” others can sense the vibration you created. “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he,” therefore, you must think only of the highest and best. Be proud of what you can do but don’t think more highly of yourself than you ought. Do the things you do well with pride, then you will take your place as a positive individual and not send out negative thoughts about yourself or anyone else. Every individual has the right to be somebody. No one can be perfect in everything. Never talk yourself down, to yourself or anyone else, because it acts as a boomerang bringing back more negation.
Thoughts are things. Don’t give life to things you do not want to grow into reality. Destroy the negative thoughts by not giving them power and you will enjoy greater happiness in your life.
You are loved.
