September 2017 Focus

The Sarasota Center of Light (SCOL) has a long and distinguished history of being a center of  Metaphysical Spirituality. Over the years this Center, as is true of organizations in general, has had its successes and challenges.  SCOL is undergoing another time of change. August brought winds of upset and transition.  The former board resigned effective  August 15 , stating  that rather than dividing the congregation further, they felt  their resignation was in the highest and best interest of SCOL.  The new board was appointed on that same day.  As President of the current board, I wish to extend heartfelt gratitude from all of us to the former board members who served tirelessly, with devotion to SCOL. We will miss you.

Change is inevitable.  Stability is achievable.  Stability is created with persistence, trust, and a strong foundation.  Now in its 68th  year, SCOL has demonstrated itself as a pillar of strength, with an institutional and cellular memory that overcomes struggles and dividing influences.

In this period of transition, the board has invited Rev. Jim Toole to be our minister.  On September 9th, a special membership meeting has been called to vote on reinstatement of Rev. Jim and to discuss the board’s progress to date and action plans for the future.

From an organizational perspective, SCOL is in need of a structural review and an analysis of the systems currently in place to operate the many services and programs SCOL offers.  These reviews are already in motion.  The board is developing a management approach of collaboration and accountability.   For those SCOL members with a long history of participation, this model of cooperation will not seem new at all, but a recalling of times past.

The Board’s goal is to create a team based management approach that is collaborative and inclusive.  We recognize the need for more open communication and information sharing with the congregation.  To this end, the Board has appointed liaisons to all SCOL teams.  If there are questions or interest in the work of a SCOL team, please contact the liaison by calling or emailing the SCOL office.

Rev. Julie Fox -Education                                   Rev. Lisa Johnson – Facilities Management

Mark Roach –  Healing                                        Vicki Palma – Music Program

Rev. Marie Rowe – Publishing                          Laura Horn – Hands of Light

Joan Volpe – Marketing

Over the next months, the Focus will feature one of the teams.  Names of team members and highlights of their work will be discussed. Requests for volunteers will be made, if needed.

In addition, the Board created an ad hoc, non voting liaison position intended to serve as a connection between the congregation, the teams, and the board.  Jim Young has agreed to serve in this role.  Please contact Jim Young by calling or emailing the SCOL office if you have overall comments or if an issue arises that has not been resolved at the team level.

To quote Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D., author of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life,

“Bringing about peaceful change begins with working on our own mind-sets.”

Wishing you peace and joy,

Joan Volpe, Ph.D.

The Law of Increase

Just before the offertory is collected at each service, we say the Offertory Affirmation.  This affirmation was created by the founders of our center, inspired by Spirit.  The original affirmation states:  The Law of Increase governs my life through giving.  All that is mine comes to me through the operation of Divine Love and Law.

At some point a decision was made to change the word mine to good, thereby changing the middle portion of the affirmation to, “All that is good comes to me….”  The original intent of the change was made so that this portion of the affirmation would not sound “selfish.”

Rev. Marie Rowe brought to our attention that although both statements are true, using the word mine is more in accordance with Spiritual Law.  By stating “All that is mine comes to me,” you are declaring your belief in “…ask and you shall receive;”  that the abundance of the universe is available to you and affirming your intention to receive.

In this affirmation we are working in accordance with Spiritual Law by giving and being open to receive”… through the operation of Divine Law and Law.”  In so doing each will experience the abundance of the universe for the highest and best.  We will begin using the word mine once again in our Offertory Affirmation honoring our founders, Spirit and Spiritual Law.

Rev. Jim Toole

Healing Ministry

The first Wednesday, September 6th , is dedicated to Healers Healing Healers in the Sanctuary at 6:00pm.  All Certified Healers and student healers are invited to join us for this special time set aside for us to receive the gift of healing and to replenish our bodies and souls.

We are pleased to announce that we are in the process of forming teams of Healers who have received special training in the art of absent healing.  This is an extension of the Healing Bowl into which requests are placed at our Wednesday evening Healing Service.

The testimonials have been so positive and uplifting that we wanted to offer the opportunity to all of having a healing team working with Spirit on behalf of their loved ones.

If you or a family member will be going into hospital or faced with a medical emergency, please call the office at 941-953-6620, email: or go to our website.

Rev. Lisa will contact you and a healing team will be assigned to you to give you comfort and prayer.

In the quiet, I hear you.

In the stillness, I am listening.

In the mist, I see you..

In the Light, I behold you.

In the twilight, I protect you.

In the dark, I enfold you.

In your temptation, I deliver you.

In your affliction, I heal you.

In Life’s burdens, I strengthen you.

In your despair, I uplift you.

In your laughter, I laugh with you.

When you remember My presence within you, true JOY abounds.

There is no separation; no You, no Me, just THE ONE, All That Is!

I breathe My life essence in your being; all that I have created is meant for

Our good pleasure and enjoyment.

I AM                                                                                      Rev. Marie H. Rowe

Ed Team

We welcome Rev. Julie Fox as the board liaison of the Education Committee.  We have openings on the Education Committee.  Anyone interested in participating please contact the office.

The Education Team is considering educational programs and workshops for the fall and the coming year.  We invite you to suggest ideas and submit a class/workshop you would like to present. The process for teaching at Sarasota Center of Light begins with submitting a proposal to the Education Team.  These Class/Workshop Proposal forms are available from Tina in the office.

When you have completed your proposal, please return them to the office and they will be put in the Education Team’s box to be considered at our next meeting. Be sure to include your preference for dates and room location.  It is important to submit proposals well in advance so that they can be considered and then promoted properly.

We look forward to hearing your ideas for classes and workshops for the fall and 2018 to help everyone better live metaphysical principles.

Labor of Love by Rev. Jim

Labor Day honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of our country.  It is also a chance to look at our job, what we do for living, or how we spend our time.

Whether we are a child, in the midst of our career, or retired, we offer ourselves to the world through who we are.  It is our purpose to be our individualized, unique expression every day.  Through this expression we create our experience, and the impact we have in our lives and in the world.

Some feel as if they have to work, some believe that work is all there is, and there are those that have no work. Children attend school, and the retired take a well-deserved break from work.  A chosen few (those who have chosen) do what they love to do.

Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet, when asked about work states: “When you work with love you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another, and to God. Work is love made visible.” He is referring to by being in a state of love in your work or your expression, you are “in Love” with yourself, with others and in union with the Love of Loves, God.

Although it may seem difficult, with all the circumstances and conditions in  the world, to find the “perfect” job, we do have a choice in how we choose to be, no matter what we’re doing.  Living in unconditional love releases us from the conditional reality in which we live.  This is not an escape but an opportunity to be who we truly are in all that we do.

If we choose to look at our expression as being of service, the fulfillment of our purpose, our heart and soul will bring the fullness of our love and the inspiration of our Spirit into each moment.  We may be challenged by the circumstances or lessons that show up, stirring our human nature, sometimes causing us to forget the Love we are.  The beauty is there’s always the next moment to choose once again.

In honor of Labor Day, in honor of yourself, take the time to look at your job, your expression, and choose to be who you really are.  Let this time off during the holiday be a time of remembrance of what truly matters to your heart and soul.  Choose to do your job, live your life, express your purpose, as a true Labor of Love.

Happy Labor Day!  Enjoy the holiday!

The Angel Hotline welcomes your questions on metaphysical themes.  If your question is selected, the Angel Hotline will answer you in the next edition of the Focus.
